Privacy
This page covers lovingautism.com — the public site, where the only thing we ask you for is an email address. It says what we collect, what we send where, and how to get rid of it. No part of it describes something we don't actually do.
What we collect when you join the list
Three things, and only these three:
- The email address you type in.
- A short label for where the signup came from — which page, and, if you arrived from an ad or a link we shared, which one. It tells us that a particular ad brought readers; it says nothing about you.
- The date and time.
We never ask for your name, anything about your child, or any health information, and there is nowhere on this site to give it to us.
What we use it for
To send you the first chapter of Before the Storm, and to let you know when there's something worth knowing — the book, and progress on what we're building next. Nothing else.
What we will never do
We will never sell, rent or hand your email to anyone for their own marketing. It stays with us and with the email service that delivers our messages, described below.
Where it's stored
In our own database, on our own server, and with Kit, the service we use to send email. Kit stores and sends on our behalf and does not use your address for anything of their own.
Counting visits
We use Umami, an analytics tool we run on our own server, to count how many people read each page and which link brought them. It sets no cookies, records nothing that identifies you, and never follows you to other websites. Those numbers go nowhere but to us.
Advertising and measurement
We run ads on Facebook and Instagram, because that is how families who'd want this book find out it exists. To know which ads are worth paying for, this site loads the Meta Pixel, which sets cookies in your browser and tells Meta when someone who saw an ad visited the site.
When you join the list, we send Meta a one-way scrambled (“hashed”) version of your email address, along with your IP address, your browser's user-agent string and the two cookies Meta's own pixel set. That combination is what lets Meta match a signup to the ad that caused it. We do not send your actual email address. For people who never sign up, Meta gets nothing from us beyond the ordinary record of a page visit that its pixel collects.
If you'd rather not be measured this way: turn off off-Facebook activity in your Meta account settings, use your browser's tracking protection, or block the pixel with an ad blocker. Any of those works, and none of them affects your chapter or your place on the list.
Spam protection
The signup form briefly holds your IP address in memory to stop a bot submitting the form hundreds of times. It is never written to the database and it disappears within minutes.
The app behind the sign-in page
We're also building an app for families, and parts of this site sit behind a sign-in. It is in private testing with a handful of invited families and is not open to the public. It handles far more sensitive information than an email address, and it will have its own privacy policy, written before it opens to anyone. Joining the waitlist does not create an account and does not put you in it.
Leaving
Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, which works immediately. If you'd rather be deleted outright — from the list and from our database — email us and we'll do it and tell you when it's done. You don't have to give a reason.
Children
This site is for parents and the adults who work with their children. It is not directed at children, and we don't knowingly collect anything from them.
If this page changes
We'll update the date below. If a change means we're doing something materially different with your email, we'll tell you in an email rather than quietly editing this page.
